The Agenda: Alameda Landing design, bus route changes, hospital loan guarantee

What’s on Alameda’s civic calendar this week? Read on to find out.

Planning Board

The Planning Board meets at 7 p.m. Monday, July 8 in council chambers on the third floor of City Hall, 2263 Santa Clara Avenue.

On the agenda: The board will conduct a design review of nine proposed retail buildings to be constructed as part of the Alameda Landing development, and will decide whether to grant a use permit to allow a Safeway grocery store to be built there to remain open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The board is also being asked to endorse a draft planning guide for Alameda Point and to offer comments on a draft zoning ordinance that would lay out permitted uses and building types in different areas of the Point. A planned hearing on a second commercial area for Alameda Landing that would include an In-N-Out Burger, Chase bank branch and Safeway gas station has been postponed to July 22.

Zoning Administrator

The Zoning Administrator meets at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 9 in Room 360 on the third floor of City Hall, 2263 Santa Clara Avenue.

On the agenda: Ploughshares Nursery is requesting permission to erect a 10-foot-high chain link fence on three sides of its Main Street location. The new fence would connect to an existing eight-foot-high fence on one side of the property.

AC Transit Workshop

AC Transit and the city’s Public Works department are conducting a workshop at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 9 in council chambers on the third floor of City Hall, 2263 Santa Clara Avenue.

On the agenda: Proposed changes to the 51A bus line including priority bus signals, a bus lane extension on Webster Street, bus stop improvements and changes to bus stop locations are among the items to be discussed.

Community Meeting – Fire Station 3

The city is hosting a community meeting on Fire Station 3 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 9 at Mastick Senior Center, 1155 Santa Clara Avenue.

On the agenda: The meeting’s purpose is to discuss potential designs of a new emergency operations center and Fire Station 3.

Alameda Free Library Board

The Alameda Free Library Board meets at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 10 in Conference Room 224 on the second floor of the Main Library, 1550 Oak Street.

On the agenda: The board will receive an update on the library’s strategic plan and will nominate and elect new officers.

Alameda Health Care District Board

The Alameda Health Care District Board will hold a public session at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 10 in the Dal Cielo Conference Room at Alameda Hospital, 2070 Clinton Avenue.

On the agenda: The board is being asked to extend Alameda Hospital’s spending authority in lieu of a budget for 2013-2014; a new budget is expected to be considered by the board in August. The board will also consider approval of a contract with a new surgeon, a construction contract for a bulk oxygen tank, and an agreement with the Alameda Hospital Foundation to guarantee a $1.5 million loan from Alameda Health System. The board will also receive an update on the process for appointing a new board member to fill a seat vacated by Elliott Gorelick, who resigned; six people have applied for the unpaid board seat.
