Board of Education

The Board of Education is holding a special meeting at 5 p.m. Monday, July 22 in the Ballena Conference Room #153 at the district office, 2060 Challenger Drive.

On the agenda: The agenda includes closed-door discussions about existing, pending and anticipated litigation; property negotiations at Alameda Point, the former Island High site in Eagle Avenue, the district’s two high school swim centers; joint use agreements with Alameda Community Radio and Alameda Family Services for portables at Encinal High School; and a conference with the district’s labor negotiators. The public may comment on closed-session topics during the public comment portions of the meeting.

Commission on Disability Issues

The Commission on Disability Issues is holding a special meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 22 in Room 360 on the third floor of City Hall, 2263 Santa Clara Avenue.

On the agenda: The board will discuss Webster Street pedestrian signals, universal design work, Park Street benches, and goals and objectives. The board will also offer a certificate of appreciation to commissioner Paulina Kirola and welcome a new commissioner, Wendy Wilkinson.

Planning Board

The Planning Board meets at 7 p.m. Monday, July 22 in council chambers on the third floor of City Hall, 2263 Santa Clara Avenue.

On the agenda: The Planning Board is set to consider approval of an In-N-Out Burger, Safeway gas station and Chase bank branch near the Webster Tube; parklet guidelines; and changes to the color scheme for new commercial buildings on the 1700 block of Park Street, formerly home to Cavanaugh Motors. Staff is asking that consideration of a variance that would legalize an existing 200-square-foot second story addition be continued to a future meeting.

Alameda Hospital affiliation – public forum

A public forum on a proposed affiliation with Alameda Health System is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 23 in the social hall at Mastick Senior Center, 1155 Santa Clara Avenue.

Zoning Administrator

The Zoning Administrator meets 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 23 in Room 360 on the third floor of City Hall, 2263 Santa Clara Avenue.

On the agenda: The Zoning Administrator will consider a request for a variance to allow a parking space at 1612 Grand Street.

City Council

The City Council meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 23 in council chambers on the third floor of City Hall, 2263 Santa Clara Avenue.

On the agenda: The council will hear an annual report for the recreation and parks department; consider options for reducing the city’s retiree medical care costs; consider endorsing a conceptual planning guide for Alameda Point; hold a public hearing on proposed garbage collection rate increases; consider refinancing some city bond issues; and consider approval of appointments to the city’s golf and youth advisory commissions. In a closed session scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., the council is scheduled to discuss a lawsuit filed by former Interim City Manager Ann Marie Gallant and a performance evaluation for City Clerk Lara Weisiger.

City Council/Board of Education Subcommittee

The City Council/Board of Education Subcommittee meets at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 24 in the Marina Room at the district office, 2060 Challenger Drive.

On the agenda: The subcommittee is scheduled to discuss long-term solutions to address the maintenance issues with the district’s two high school pools and an Alameda Little League donation to the city and school district to erect lights at the Rittler and Wood baseball fields.

Civil Service Board

The Civil Service Board meets at 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 24 in Room 360 on the third floor of City Hall, 2263 Santa Clara Avenue.

Transportation Commission

The Transportation Commission meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 24 in council chambers on the third floor of City Hall, 2263 Santa Clara Avenue.

On the agenda: The commission will consider an appeal of a decision not to install “no parking – street sweeping” signs on the 2600 block of La Jolla and also, improved roadway changes aimed at improving pedestrian and bicycle safety near Encinal High School. The commission will also receive a quarterly update regarding transportation policies and plans.
