While recovering from the shock of the Newtown, Conn. school shooting, Alameda photographer Anne Kohler posed a question to her Facebook friends: “If you could describe, in one word, what we lost in Newtown, Conn. what would that word be?” More than 48 friends posted words on her page, words Kohler then used for her “The Things We Lost: In Memory of Newtown, Conn.” photo essay being shown at Frank Bette Center for the Arts starting March 8.

A 112-acre veterans’ cemetery and outpatient clinic the Department of Veterans Affairs hopes to build at Alameda Point won’t have a significant impact on the California Least Tern colony that breeds on the runways nearby, a draft environmental assessment the government released on Friday says – as long as the VA and other agencies follow a list of measures outlined by the federal agency charged with protecting it. Comments on the assessment are being accepted through March 29, and a pair of public meetings to discuss it will take place on March 14.

Scores of teachers and their supporters stormed City Hall on Tuesday night to demand a new contract from Alameda school district leaders, following all-night settlement talks that ended without a deal being reached. Superintendent Kirsten Vital told The Alamedan that the district and the union are slated to meet with a state mediator on Monday to discuss contract articles that remain open.

Hundreds of America’s Cup racing fans packed the Alameda Theatre & Cineplex’s main historic theater Thursday night to learn more about the race series starting in July and to meet the members of Challenger of Record Artemis Racing, whose headquarters are in Alameda Point’s Hangar 12.
