The Alameda Citizens Task Force is holding a panel presentation and discussion on "Responsible School Board Governance" at 7 p.m. today in the second floor conference room at Alameda Hospital, 2070 Clinton Avenue. The event is free and open to the public. Discussion topics will include the Alameda Unified School District's existing bond debt and the potential structure of a new bond program; a recent land and cash swap between the school district, the city and the Alameda Housing Authority; and the school district's rented office space. Voters will be electing two school board members in November and may also be asked to vote on a schools bond.
Art in the Garden, a fundraiser for Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter, takes place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Sunday, May 4 at 1250 St. Charles Street. Event highlights include black and white photographs of Alameda by M.E. Goodan, priced to sell for between $60 and $100; a silent auction for a custom pet portrait by artist Mi'Chelle Frederick; an assortment of unusual succulents for sale; visits with animals from the shelter; and light refreshments. Admission is free.
Encinal High School is hosting its 19th Annual Extravaganza of Bands from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 17 at the school, which is at 210 Central Avenue. The event, which will include a dozen visiting bands and an anticipated 1,000 musicians and spectators, is free and open to the public. The event includes a middle and high school concert band competition, which takes place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the high school's gym; a parade competition will take place on Pacific Avenue beginning at 10 a.m. Awards will be given at 3 p.m. on the Encinal High School football field. Streets will be closed and parking on and around the campus restricted to help facilitate the event. Street closures are set to take place from 9 a.m. to noon on Central Avenue from Third Street to Pacific Avenue, Pacific Avenue from Central Avenue to Fourth Street, Fourth Street from Pacific Avenue to Haight Avenue; Third Street from Haight Avenue to Central Avenue; and on the 300 block of Haight Avenue.
Alameda Point Collaborative is holding its annual Not Your Mother’s Garden party fundraiser from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. May 18 at Ploughshares Nursery, 2701 Main Street. Admission is $30, and includes a farm-to-table tasting menu, custom cocktails and live indie pop from The Hot Toddies. The collaborative will also present awards to individuals and institutions that have aided its efforts. Tickets are available online.
St. Joseph Garden Club’s 19th annual Gardens Galore tour is set to take place on May 18. The tour will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., rain or shine, and a garden boutique will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Advance tickets are $20 if purchased by May 16 and are available by sending a check payable to St. Joseph Garden Club to 861 Oak Street, Alameda, Calif. 94501. Advance tickets may also be purchased at Thomsen Garden Center, 1113 Lincoln Avenue; Daisy’s, 1347 Park Street; and St. Joseph Basilica, 1109 Chestnut Street. Tickets can be purchased on the day of the tour for $25 at St. Joseph Notre Dame High School, 1011 Chestnut Street. Proceeds from the tour help pay for scholarships for students to attend the high school and St. Joseph Elementary School.
