Community Corner: Little League coaches needed, Collaborative seeking cookies and more

The Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir will perform in a Seedlings concert to raise money to send fifth graders at Ruby Bridges Elementary School to science camp. The concert is at 7 p.m. January 25 at Kofman Auditorium; tickets are $15 each, and are available in the Ruby Bridges school office; by contacting teacher Heather Figueroa at; or at the door. The OIGC Youth Choir, African Drum and Dance and the school’s fifth graders will also perform. The school hopes to raise $23,750 to send 97 students to the three-day, two-night outdoor education camp at Mission Springs Outdoor Education Center in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

AC Transit has changed service on dozens of bus lines, expanding the 51A line, which serves as a main line connecting Alameda to Oakland; creating a new line to connect Bay Farm Island to Lincoln Middle School; and expanding service on the OX line to take passengers from Bay Farm Island to Park Street and beyond. The Alameda Point Collaborative is looking for volunteers to help serve a holiday dinner this Thursday, December 19 and for donations of cookies and holiday pies for the meal. The meal is from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Albert H. DeWitt Officers Club, 641 West Redline Avenue, and anyone interested in serving or volunteering in the kitchen may sign up here. Cookies and pies will be accepted between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. today and 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Thursday at the Collaborative’s main office, at 677 West Ranger Avenue.

Alameda Little League is looking for managers to oversee teams for the spring 2014 season. Manager candidates will meet with league president Ron Matthews in December to learn more about their role as coaches. Applications for the volunteer manager jobs and additional information are available on the Alameda Little League website.

East Bay United Bay Oaks Soccer Club will be holding tryouts for their U9 and U10 girls' teams in late January. Tryouts for the U9 team will be held between 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. January 25 and January 26 at the College of Alameda, 555 Ralph Appezzato Way, and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. January 29 in Raimondi Park, 1899 Campbell Street, Oakland. Tryouts for the U10 team will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. January 25 and January 26 at the College of Alameda and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. January 29 in Raimondi Park. Girls trying out for the teams must have been born between August 1, 2004 and July 31, 2005 for the U10 team and August 1, 2005 and July 31, 2006 for the U9 team.
