Five young soccer players from the Bladium Sports and Fitness Club’s Player ID Combine have been selected to attend the West Ham Soccer Academy’s national camp and the West Ham United Elite Player Academy in London. Chase Lane, Thato Meko, Alejandra Melendez, Kellen Richardson and Keegan Ledger were selected to attend the camps. Soccer players ages 9 to 16 can try out for additional spots in the camps by participating in Bladium’s upcoming Player ID camp, which is taking place Friday through Sunday, April 4-6; registration is available online. The players will be scouted by former West Ham United captain Ian Bishop. Bladium is at 800 West Tower Avenue on Alameda Point.

Astronaut Buzz Aldrin will be aboard the USS Hornet for Splashdown 45, which will honor the 45th anniversary of the first time humans walked on the moon. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 26, with a special reception from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. In addition to the appearance by Aldrin, who was part of the Apollo 11 crew that made the historic moon landing, activities will include hands-on science activities, a portable planetarium, moon rock displays, specialized Apollo-themed tours and interactive exhibits. The Hornet recovered the first two missions to the moon; it’s now docked at 707 West Hornet Avenue, on Alameda Point. Aldrin will sign copies of his book, “Mission to Mars: My Vision for Space Exploration.”

The League of Women Voters of Alameda is hosting its annual “Meet Your Public Officials” event from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. April 23 in the Rathskellar in the Alameda Elks Lodge, 2255 Santa Clara Avenue. Admission to the event, which is a fundraiser for the league, is $10, and the tickets are tax deductible. Tickets can be purchased at the event or in advance from a League member or by sending a check to LWVA, P.O. Box 1645, Alameda, Calif. 94501. The event includes “speed dating” sessions with local public officials that will allow participants to ask questions, plus a silent auction, raffle, light appetizers and a no-host wine bar. A quartet of local scout groups is holding an Alameda Scout Community Day form 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 12 in Washington Park, corner of Central Avenue and Eighth Street. The event, which is being co-hosted by Alameda Boy Scout Troop 73, Crew 512, Cub Scout Pack 2 and the Sea Scouts will showcase activities being undertaken by the scout groups. The event is free and open to the public.
