Community Corner: Student successes, contributions collected and volunteers sought

Contributions are being collected for a sixth grade student and basketball player who lost his father to gun violence in January. Artwork by students at Wood Middle School is on display at Stopwaste.org’s Oakland offices through Friday. The artwork is intended to bring attention to the health of the world’s oceans and raise awareness about viewers’ capacity to make a difference. Wood, which incorporates Robert W. Crown Memorial Beach into students’ studies, has been formally recognized as an Ocean Guardian School and has won a pair of grants for its ocean guardian work.

Meanwhile, two Encinal High School students, Kelly McCormick and Jenny Zhang, are finalists for the University at California’s Regents Scholarships, which offer awards of $1,000 or more, and another Encinal student, Raymond Cole, has been appointed to West Point.

The Alameda Point Collaborative is seeking volunteers to assist in the construction of a new, sustainable Ploughshares Nursery building. A groundbreaking ceremony set for 11 a.m. April 10 is slated to kick off construction.
