A pair of West End schools were locked down as a precautionary move Wednesday morning as police investigated a report of shots being fired in the area.

The Alameda Journal is reporting that the teen who made the report to police made up the story and has been arrested.

Police locked down Island High School and Ruby Bridges Elementary School after receiving a report from an unidentified man about being in a fight and shots being fired from a weapon possessed by the other party. The initial report put the alleged incident at Ralph Appezzato Memorial Parkway and Third Street; a later report put it at Ralph Appezzato and Webster Street.

"We're still investigating the case. At this point, there's no evidence that occurred," Alameda Police Lt. Jill Ottaviano said Wednesday morning. The alleged suspect, she said, was never near or on the school campuses.

She said the last of the two lockdowns was lifted about a half hour after the report was received.
