The Kiwanis Club of Alameda's 14th annual Chili Cook-Off and BBQ Dinner was held on Saturday, January 26th at the O'Club on Alameda Point. More than 280 attendees tasted chili from the 11 teams competing for the best chili in Alameda. Each chili was judged both by the attendees (peoples' choice) and by professional chefs. The Peoples’ Choice named Ala Costa (provided by parents/sponsors) the best, with High Street Station and EON Technologies second and third. The professional judges gave first prize to the Alameda Firefighters Local 689; Will Brother's Chili Pepper Company and Ala Costa were second and third. Other teams were 404 Classic, 1400 Bar and Grill, Alameda Business Network, Alameda Elder Communities, Chili Chupacabaras, and LilliWorks. All teams provided wonderful examples of culinary expertise!

Attendees also participated in a silent auction, a raffle for iPads and an iPod, a fabulous BBQ dinner catered by Back Forty Texas BBQ, line dancing lessons, and dancing to the music provided by Sound Explosion.

Our sponsors are instrumental in making the event such a success. We give a big thanks to Cheryl Saxton; Hewitt, Jones & Fitch CPAs; Dominic McKenna (Edward Jones); Harbor Bay Realty; Jan Nichols-Franz Piano Studio; South Shore Center; and Sterling Mortgage. Special thanks to WesCafé for its in-kind donation, Nicole Will for line-dancing lessons, Dance 10 for entertainment and Vicki Brown for decorations.

All of the proceeds from the Chili Cook-Off provide funds that Kiwanis distributes yearly to nonprofit agencies throughout Alameda. We are most appreciative for the over 100 items donated by caring retail, business and individual community members. We wish there was room to list each of them because their participation provides the backbone of Kiwanis’ support to Alameda charities. Kiwanis gives a sincere thanks for their support and the continued support of our attendees.

We look forward to seeing everyone at next year's event.
