Letters to the Editor: Navy should have spoken at Alameda Point event

Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor,

As someone who has worked on the closure and development of the Naval Air station for the past 20 years, I was as excited as everyone there to witness the transfer of the first phase of Navy lands to the City of Alameda. The Mayor, City Manager and others echoed the feeling of most of us for this major forward step in finally developing Alameda Point.

The presence of Roger Natsuhara, the Assistant Secretary of the Navy from Washington, D.C., indicated to me that the Navy would have some words to add to the ceremony. I was exceedingly disappointed when John Russo, City Manager, concluded his remarks saying something like, "Let's do it!" and then the MC says, "Thank you for coming." After all these years and all these negotiations and all these politics, one would hope the the U.S. Navy would have had the courtesy to give some recognition to this milestone event.
