MAP: Holiday donation locations

Michele Ellson

Our color-coded barrel map: Red for toys, blue for coats, yellow and green for food.

Where can you donate a warm coat, food or toys this holiday season? The Alamedan has put together a color-coded map showing you where donation barrels have been placed across the Island.

The map includes local barrel locations for One Warm Coat, which is collecting coats this holiday season; Toys for Tots; the Alameda County Community Food Bank and the Alameda Food Bank. Additional details on what each organization is looking for and how long the barrels will be out are available by clicking the links to each organization's website.

The county food bank has teamed up with NBC Bay Area and Safeway to put together special food bags containing pasta and sauce, canned vegetables, peanut butter and tuna. Those are $10 each, and can be purchased at both Alameda Safeway stores.

Donation boxes for Toys for Tots will be collected on the morning of December 17, and toys will be distributed on December 20; youths 16 and under from low-income families who are interested in receiving toys can sign up through December 14, either in person or by calling the food bank at 523-5850.

And the Lighted Yacht Parade's organizers are teaming up with the Alameda County Community Food Bank and Oakland Firefighters Random Acts to collect food, toys and cash during the parade this Saturday, December 7; collection points have been established at the Encinal Yacht Club and Oakland Yacht Club, and additional information is available on the parade website. Parade participants who hop a ferry to join can get a free ride ticket if they donate a toy onboard.

If you know of additional dropoff locations that should be added to this map or other opportunities to donate during the holiday season, feel free to post a comment and we'll add the information.
