Park Street Bridge closures begin tonight

Michele Ellson

Island drivers, prepare: Overnight closures of the Park Street Bridge begin today.

The closures are scheduled to take place from 8:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday until August 14. The bridge will be totally closed to car and bicycle traffic during those times, with a detour routing drivers over the Fruitvale Bridge in effect. Cyclists will be routed down East 7th Street.

The closures will also affect vessel traffic under the bridge; large vessels that need both of the bridge’s leaves open to pass through during construction hours will be required to provide at least two hours’ advance notice.

The closures are being put into effect at night to minimize disruption to commuters and local businesses.

The Alameda County Public Works Agency is closing the bridge to do deck and other repairs. The job follows work that closed the High Street Bridge for over a month and is happening as Caltrans works to replace the I-880’s 29th Avenue overpass.

Built in 1935, the Park Street Bridge handles more than 38,000 vehicle trips per day. It received a $5.6 million upgrade in 1998 and a seismic retrofit in 2009. The county’s fact sheet doesn’t say how much the current project will cost.

Additional information is available by calling 670-5591 or by e-mail, at info@acpwa.org. Project updates are available on the Alameda County Public Works Agency’s website.

There is no mention of pedestrians during the closures. Are they barred also?

Hi Carol: Yes, pedestrians too.
