A 72-year-old Alameda man is facing a murder charge in the shooting death of his wife.

JC Canfield is facing a murder charge for allegedly killing his wife, police said. Police Chief Paul Rolleri said Canfield came to the front desk at Alameda police headquarters on Sunday and confessed to killing his wife. Police went to the couple's apartment on the 2200 block of Clinton Avenue and found the woman dead of a gunshot wound to the head, he said. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

Rolleri said Canfield claimed to have shot his wife because she was ill. He said Canfield's wife, who police did not name, had been in a care home in town for the past several months but that Canfield had checked her out Sunday.

Police took Canfield into custody following his confession.
